G1 Irish 2000 Guineas: LOPE Y FERNANDEZ great third

LOPE Y FERNANDEZ made his sire LOPE DE VEGA proud today when he finished an amazing third in the €250,000 G1 Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh. Coming off a nine-month layoff, the Aidan O'Brian-trained colt ran a phenomenal race in the classic over the mile and even looked for a moment as though he was headed for triumph and following into Phoenix Of Spain's footsteps. Yet the heavily favoured winner was too good today and LOPE Y FERNANDEZ made a gamely effort to secure a fantastic third place under jockey Seamie Heffernan.
